Rosa arkansana is another wild rose native to Minnesota. It differs from the smooth wild rose (rosa blanda) by being much shorter and preferring sunnier, drier areas. The flowers look similar in shape, but rosa arkansana often has lighter shades of pink as well as stripes within the petals. Flowers give way to red rose hips in the fall. Rosa arkansana grows more similarly to a perennial than a shrub rose. Its stems rarely grow over 2 feet in height and within a few seasons the older stems die and give way to new stems growing from the ground. In this manner, the plant normally grows between 10 inches and 2 feet in height and spreads wide.
