This native juniper grows not only native in the United States from Arizona to Alaska, but can also be found growing as a native on other continents. Whereas in southern areas of the United States it can be found as a small tree, in Minnesota it tends to grow as a semi-large shrub.
Its berries are known as the flavoring of gin and it is reported that most berries for that purpose are still wild-harvested.
Common juniper prefers to grow in dry, sunny areas and will not thrive in shady areas or moist soils.
