Tsuga canadensis

Also known as Eastern Hemlock

Mature Height: 60-75 ft.

Mature Spread: 25-35 ft.

Hemlock has a slow to medium growth rate.

Soil / Climate: Hemlock likes cool, moist areas, very tolerant and will grow in dense shade. Able to tolerate full sun in cooler northern climate. Does not tolerate drought. Enjoys winter mulch.

Notes: Hemlock is conical or pyramidal shape having soft, graceful, horizontal to pendulous branches, fine texture. Small cones, about 0.5″ to 1.0″ long turning light brown in the fall. Hemlock are excellent evergreens for screening use in shaded locations where most needle evergreens fail.

Fun Fact: There are said to be less than 50 mature hemlocks left standing in Minnesota. This is why it is classified as endangered. The reason? One of the reasons is they are slow growing and much of the logging and wildfires that took out other pines also killed them, but they don't grow back as quickly as other evergreens.
