This plant is native across most of the United States but remains somewhat obscure as it likes growing in thickets along floodplain areas. It is named after its unique flowers that resemble buttons. While wildlife devour the seeds in the fall and winter, the leaves of this plant are poisonous to livestock. This trait also makes it deer resistant. An excellent choice for a raingarden. With a long blooming season and many flowers, it is a favorite with bees and butterflies alike. The swallowtail butterfly is said to be especially attracted to it.

Height: 8-12'

Soil: Wet to Medium Wet (enjoys flood plain conditions)
