Also known as red elm, slippery elm is native from North Dakota south to Texas and all states to the east of them (including Minnesota). It has been valued for thousands of years for its inner bark which was used in traditional medicine. It also has historical value for weaving and crafts. Unfortunately, its population has declined significantly in Minnesota due to Dutch Elm Disease.
