Also known as Ash-leaf Maple or Manitoba Maple, this species of maple is familiar to many while remaining forgotten as a maple for planting. Per its name as "Ash-leaf Maple," its leaves do not share much similarity with other maples, but instead look more similar in structure and shape to an ash trees. As with other maples, it has little "helicopters" or samaras. It is a very fast grower and turns yellow in fall.
While it was once popular as a windbreak and landscape tree due to its cold hardiness and fast growth, it has dropped in popularity recently. It is really a shame as a well pruned tree can live well over 100 years and will get to a mature size considerably faster than other species of the family.
