Dwarf raspberry (rubus pubescens) leaves are often mistaken by hikers as wild strawberries; however, when the little red to dark red raspberries are sighted, the looker becomes puzzled and often passes on unsure. Its really too bad! Dwarf raspberries are small, only growing up to 6 inches tall and their little white flowers are fairly showy although short-lasting. The fruit that shows afterwards is very tasty! Its flavor is very similar to a raspberry, and it looks the same albeit smaller and often a deeper red.
Dwarf raspberry grows well in shady areas although it isn't bothered by sun if there is adequate moisture. It grows along the ground in little runners that can sometimes be traced for several feet if it hasn't rooted into the ground already.
While it is easy to find and grow, it never forms dense colonies like other members of its family and would likely be a good ground cover in part shade locations alongside other perennials.
