Ceanothus americanus

Low, bushy rounded shrub native to Minnesota. Clusters of white flowers in the summer. The large taproot makes it very drought-tolerant, but also difficult to transplant if needed to be moved. New Jersey Tea puts its energy into establishing its roots the first few years after planting, so do not expect to see significant top growth until after this time. Grows well in areas frequented by forest fires.

Valuable to multiple butterfly larvae as a host plant. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are also attracted to the flowers. Deer and rabbits enjoy the leaves (use protection as needed). The name originates from the colonists using it as a green tea substitute. Also known as Redroot.

Height: 1-3'

Zone: 3-9

Soil: Well-drained, will NOT grow in heavy/wet soil.

Light: Full sun
