Juglans nigra
This majestic tree is long-lived and forms some of the most prized wood for woodworking.
It is also desired for its hard-to-open but delicious richly flavored nuts. The shells of the nuts were historically used for making dye. For this reason, it is recommended to plant far away from sidewalks or other stainable surfaces. Trees start bearing nuts around 15 years of age.
Black walnut tree roots produce a substance known as juglone which keeps many types of plants from growing around it. In essence, it produces its own competitor killing chemical. This brilliant survival strategy can be handy in places that are recovering from buckthorn or other invasive species, while also considered carefully if fruit trees or flowering shrubs would be planted nearby. Some plants are not effected by the chemical, so check if a plant is "juglone tolerant" before planting nearby.
